Carthage is a memory, kept alive by a particularly ugly yellow brick shaft on Norton Street, and an unusually beautiful park drive called the Carthage road along the river bank. This road is the objective to which I wish to point your gaze: For it follows pretty faithfully the line of a garden or park, that the old-time founders of Carthage village set apart upon their map as a "public walk" to be devoted to the people forever.. This, mind you, was in 1816. Carthage became part of Rochester by almost imperceptible degrees. Perhaps after all, the real beginning of the city's playgrounds was linked with the beginnings of the city itself. DEPRAVITY SET TO MUSIC IN OUR CITY Our cities are just beginning to have some control over the dances held in our dancing saloons. It is the beginning of what we hope will be a splendid reform. In a general way it is possible to do away with the "Grizzly Bear," the "Bunny Hug," and the "Turkey Trot," and some other social dances by ordinance, but we ought to realize that not only does such prohibition make such dances fascinating for some lawdess ones, but that the music and the words to the music have a great deal to do w: ith the immoral fun which some social dances make easy. One writer says, "The writers of such popular songs and music as "That Mexican Twist," "I Got You, Steve," "That Mysterious Rag," "Oh, You Beautiful Doll," and "Everybody's Doing it Now," etc., have more influence of a downward tendency than can be offset by twice the amount of home, religious or social uplift...
